Winter – Time to Embrace the Changing Seasons

Winter time in the mountains

I love winter, how about you? As the days shorten and the air turns from crisp to freezing I tend to hear quite a few complaints about the onset of winter and the loss of Daylight Savings Time. For me, it’s time to unpack the turtleneck sweaters, get my parka out and take my Bernese Mountain Dogs on long afternoon hikes. (They love winter, too!) Honestly, is there anything better than a Hot Toddy on a cold evening, sitting in front of the fire!?! Maybe sitting outside under the starry sky at Antlers cuddling in front of our fireplace … don’t worry we’ll supply a blanket or two to keep you toasty!

Dog Sledding at Durango Dog Ranch

A favorite Winter past time … dog sledding at Durango Dog Ranch.

My goal for the winter of 2016/2017 is to show my guests the beauty and tranquility of the season along with some of my favorite winter activities in Durango. Life can move a bit slower this time of the year but maybe it’s time to experience a new snowy adventure. Have you ever tried snowshoeing or cross country skiing? How about dog sledding at Durango Dog Ranch? There’s always skiing at Purgatory & skiing under the stars in Hesperus. The truly adventurous can give ice climbing a try ….  You’re more apt to find me at Rapp Corral on a sleigh ride dreaming of that elusive Big Guy with the white beard. Speaking of the Big Guy, there’s always The Polar Express for the kiddos and the kiddos at heart.

I’ve only touched on it but as you can see there’s plenty to do here in Durango even for the non-skiers. As time goes by we’ll be offering cooking classes here at the inn. So if you absolutely loved what you had for breakfast, you’ll have the chance to learn how to make it at home for your families. Hmmm, breakfast … another reason I love this season. Chef Kurtis will break out some stick to your ribs fare to keep you going on all those adventures awaiting you … pumpkin waffles, gingerbread biscotti, biscuits with chorizo gravy and a variety of baked oatmeal goodies … OK, I’m a tad bit weird, I also love oatmeal.
