Durango is a veritable wonderland for outdoor enthusiasts, and winter is no exception! One of our favorite winter activities in Colorado is snowshoeing. Simply strap on a pair of snowshoes and Durango’s scenic hiking trails can be enjoyed throughout the colder months.
Our favorite trails for snowshoeing in Durango include:
The Hermosa Creek Trail
A scenic out and back trek following Hermoosa Creek 20 miles into the San Juan Mountains before ending at a campground. Endless views!
Falls Creek Trail
Also known as the Hidden Valley, these trails offer beautiful views of sandstone cliffs to the West. There are several trailheads to start from with round-trip loops starting at 4 miles.
Mesa Verde National Park
A truly mystical experience, explore the famous ruins peacefully blanketed in snow without the summer crowds. Mesa Verde has several designated snowshoe trails open during the winter ranging from 1 to 12 miles. Book our Snowshoe Mesa Verde Package, which includes your snowshoe rentals, and enjoy an insulated backpack picnic to take along, plus hot cider with homemade cookies to greet you on your return to the inn.
If you are the type who likes to get competitive, Durango also hosts the Winter Warrior Snowshoe Races every January, which includes a 10K, 5K, and kids race!
