Best Colorado Breweries

If you’re a beer lover, you’re in luck! You don’t have to travel far to sample some of the sweetest suds in the southwest. Downtown Durango is home to some of the best Colorado breweries and just 10 minutes from Antlers on the Creek. We recommend visiting the following, all within walking distance of one another and providing a fun way to explore Durango.

Brew Pub & Kitchen

A fantastic intro to the flavors of Durango, stop in at Brew Pub & Kitchen to get a unique sampling of local beers while enjoying a delicious “from scratch” lunch and views of the spectacular Smelter Mountain and iconic Durango and Silverton railroad. Once you have some fuel, you’ll be ready to continue on to the pub crawl.

Steamworks Brewing Company

We’d label this under “must-visit” as this is local and visitor favorite. Just a couple blocks from Brew Pub & Kitchen is Steamworks and their award-winning beers on tap. From Kolsh to Stout and everything in between, you could definitely spend a good amount of time here. Plus, their restaurant serves fresh and seasonal dishes, complementing the spectrum of flavors they’re pouring.

Carver Brewing Co.

Just 5 minutes up the road, you’ll find another Durango “must.” Founded in 1988, Carver is the Southwest’s original brew pub and second craft brewery in Colorado! In addition to the variety of ales and lagers, Carver is known for their handcrafted root beer! This is also a favorite local spot for breakfast (for the early pub crawlers).

Animas Brewing Company

Enjoy a 10-minute stroll from the oldest brewery in Durango to the newest! Enjoy their relaxed family atmosphere and beautiful outdoor patio on the river. Boasting their own spin on traditional comfort food, be sure to order a pint and try one of their delicious pasties.

Still thirsty? There are a couple notable breweries just outside of the downtown area, including Durango Brewing Company (just a 3-minute drive from Animas) and Ska Brewing Co. (about 5 minutes south of downtown). And there are even more breweries outside Durango to explore.

Craft Wineries

While Southwestern Colorado isn’t often associated with the words “wine country,” there are some wonderful local gems for our wino guests. Read on to plan your wine tasting adventure.

Several wines from one of the best Colorado wineries

Four Leaves Winery

Practically next door to Brew Kitchen & Pub in downtown Durango, you’ll find the charming Four Leaves Winery. Using grapes from all over the world, Four Leaves makes their own wine in house, and you can too! Offering tastings of a variety of reds, whites, fruit and dessert wines, there’s something for everyone here. In addition to trying and buying wines here, you can also create your wine and design your own label! This place offers a unique experience, delicious wines, and great gifts to take home with you!

Sutcliffe Vineyards

Escape the “city” for a day amongst the vines in Cortez, about one hour east of our Durango bed and breakfast. There, in McElmo Canyon, part of the ancient desert region of Colorado’s southwest, you’ll be surprised to find award-winning wines. Their tasting room is open 12-5pm daily and all year round. While an appointment isn’t necessary, it might be a good idea to reserve your spot at the bar.

Guy Drew Vineyards

Also located in McElmo Canyon, just east of Sutcliffe, is Guy Drew Vineyards, a gorgeous pueblo-style winery sitting on 155 acres of ancient Anasazi grounds. Guy Drew and his wife Ruth use innovative methods to grow their grapes and make their wines in a way that preserves this land and its ancient ruins. Offering a wide variety of very affordable bottles, take your time tasting and taking in the history and natural beauty of this place.

Fox Fire Farms

Fox Fire Farms is another spot worth the trip, voted #1 destination in Ignacio, Colorado. Located 40 minutes southeast of Durango is an absolutely stunning 910-acre ranch, and the only winery in the region. Here, the cooler climate lends to fantastic Riesling grapes and other unique varietals and blends representing an appealing American-French style. Enjoy a leisurely afternoon sipping on their award-winning wines in an unforgettable setting.

Distilleries & More

Durango and its surrounding towns provide more than just craft beer and wines; you can also taste some of Colorado’s best spirits, ciders, and even sodas! See below for some favorite local joints as well as a fantastic map of all the craft beverages in the greater southwest area, courtesy of durango.org.

Durango Craft Spirits

Durango’s first “grain to glass” distillery since Prohibition, a visit here is like a trip back in time. Visit their tasting room or go on a tour for just $5 and learn about the spirit-making process. Plus, your $5 admission can go towards your purchase of a cocktail or bottle of one of their vodkas, moonshines, or bourbons.

Honey House Distillery

About 15 minutes north of downtown is Durango’s very own honey distillery! A division of Honeyville, a local family-owned beekeeping business, Honey House produces hand crafted small-batch distilled honey spirits. Check out their sweet drink menu including a honey blended bourbon whiskey, vodka distilled from wildflower honey mead, and a caramelized honey spiced rum.

Zuberfizz – Durango Soda Company

Not a big drinker? Or maybe you just need a break from alcohol? Head a few minutes south of downtown to Zuberfizz! Using pure cane sugar and innovative flavors and pouring from taps, this is a soda shop unlike most. Sample the classics like root beer, ginger ale and vanilla cream soda or try something a little different like their strawberry rhubarb, coco fizz, or key lime cream soda.
