I can almost hear the kids yelling “Trick or Treat”, can you? Autumn in Durango is in full swing around here! Magnificent gold Aspen trees are rapidly losing their leaves, so much so that it’s hard to believe there are any left clinging to the branches. The days are definitely shorter but Durango is enjoying an Indian Summer right now. Early mornings shimmer in a layer of frost but give way to glorious sunny days. In the afternoon as the sun dips below the mountains it becomes downright chilly and it’s time to light the fire. The aroma of Spiced Cider wafts through our Durango inn during Happy Hour.
This time of year, I see many familiar faces around Antlers. Some Guests come back year after year, one such Guest and I were chatting away last year discussing “Monumental Birthdays” and lo and behold it turns out we were born on the same day! Others come bearing gifts, unexpected, but oh so appreciated when they’re Hatch green chiles from New Mexico!
Antlers on the Creek has hosted several Colorado elopements and weddings this Autumn and not only are the couples beautiful but so are our grounds. I get to decorate our Wedding Arch with Sunflowers, Crabapples from the garden and gorgeous Autumnal leaves.
I even sugared some of my apples and crabapples decorating one of the wedding cakes! Another cake had a cascade of sunflowers.
Our apple trees have so many apples this year Chef Kurtis is busy coming up with new ways to include them in the menus. Tomorrow morning Guests will indulge in Apple Tacos as a fruit course before they dive into a plate of Huevos Rancheros. Què Bueno!
